Day 2 - Rome

Today we will have a city tour of the capital of Italy and one of the oldest and most influential cities in Western civilization. The Colosseum, the Roman forums, the squares and fountains of the center, the great life of the city. We finish in St. Peter’s in the Vatican, an independent state within the city of Rome and the center of the Catholic Church. You can visit the basilica and the museums.
In the evening we include a transfer to Trastévere, a lively neighborhood known for its typical small restaurants.

Day 4 - Rome -Naples -Capri -Sorrento -Salerno

An early start in Rome, to travel to the south of Italy. We pass through NAPLES where we embark (boat ticket included) for the ISLAND OF CAPRI; if you wish, you can take a launch to the White Grotto or take a trip on the cable car to Capri capital. After lunch, we will board once more and continue to SORRENTO, a town full of charm and tourist life at the foot of the cliff. Time to stroll. We continue to the Gulf of Salerno. Accommodation in SALERNO.

Day 5 - Salerno -Paola -Messina -Taormina

We travel to the south of ¨the boot¨. Attractive southern Italian scenery as we cross the Cilento National Park. We arrive in PAOLA, on the shores of the Tyrrhenian Sea, we visit the sanctuary of St Francis of Paola and we have free time for lunch in its pretty historic centre. We go on our way to VILLA SAN GIOVANNI where we take a short ferry crossing to the island of SICILY. Arrival in MESSINA where we will have time for a stroll and to visit the cathedral before continuing to TAORMINA. Dinner included. NB: Accommodation in the “region of Taormina”, the accommodation may sometimes be in Messina.

Day 6 - Taormina

At the foot of the Etna volcano, the very beautiful city of TAORMINA was defined by Churchill as the prettiest place on earth. Time to stroll around the ancient city centre full of life, its Greek theatre overlooking unforgettable scenery. You can also enjoy the beach. Dinner included.

Day 7 - Taormina -Noto -Syracuse -Agrigento

We travel to SYRACUSE, a city which for a time rivalled Athens and Rome for its power and splendour. Time to visit its magnificent historic centre. After lunch we go on to NOTO, a small city that seems to have stopped in time, the Baroque jewel of Sicily. We carry on towards AGRIGENTO. In the coach we see the magnificent temple complex. Dinner included.

Day 8 - Agrigento -Marsala - Erice -Palermo

With a local guide we visit the Valley of the Temples, an impressive archaeological site considered the most complete complex of Greek temples (ticket not included). We travel to MARSALA, a historic city with a lot of atmosphere and a famous wine, and time for lunch. We go on around the Marsala salt marshes to ERICE, a very picturesque Phoenician town overlooking the sea. Time to stroll. We carry on to PALERMO. Dinner included.

Day 9 - Palermo -Monreale -Night crossing

After breakfast, tour of PALERMO. The Sicilian capital is a city full of contrasts. Stories of Arabs, Normans, the splendour of the Baroque period. We include a transfer to the beautiful village (now an outlying district of Palermo) of MONREALE. The city particularly stands out for the Palace of the Normans with its Palatine Chapel and Cathedral. At the end of the afternoon we board a modern night ferry. Accommodation in double cabins with bathroom.

Day 10 - Naples -Pompeii -Cassino -Rome

Arrival in NAPLES first thing in the morning (breakfast not included). After disembarking, time for breakfast. We continue to POMPEII to see the remains of this Roman city that was covered by the ash of Vesuvius with a local guide (tickets not included). After lunch, continuation to CASSINO to see the immense Abbey; time too in the Polish Cemetery that reminds us that one of the toughest battles of the Second World War took place here. Continuation to ROME. Arrival in Rome at the end of the afternoon.

Day 11 - Rome -Florence

We travel to the capital of Tuscany - FLORENCE, upon arrival we will make a stop to take a photo at the Michelangelo viewpoint, where we can have one of the most beautiful views over the city. After that we include a sightseeing tour with a local guide of the capital of Tuscany, one of the most visited cities in the country, considered the cradle of the Renaissance and few of the most influential artists and thinkers in history, such as Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Botticelli or Raphael. Highlights include the Gothic cathedral (duomo), the ancient Stone Bridge (Ponte Vecchio) with its goldsmiths´ shops and the Signoria square - the political heart of the city with the town hall in a medieval building.

Florence -Pisa -Cinque Terre -Genoa

Day 12 - Florence -Pisa -Cinque Terre -Genoa

Today we continue our journey towards PISA. On a little tourist train we will travel to the Piazza Dei Miracoli (Square of Miracles), where there will be time to admire one, the well known Leaning Tower of Pisa. After this we head to the Ligurian Coast, with some of the prettiest coastlines in Europe. We will visit the CINQUE TERRE which has been declared UNESCO World Heritage Site. It comprises of five villages, almost isolated by road, which live on fishing and tourism. We arrive by train, ticket included, to one of its charming towns (normally VERNAZZA, but on busy tourist dates it could be Manarola or Corniglia, very similar towns that are somewhat less crowded). Time to have a lunch. Afterwards we travel by train to LEVANTO, where we take the bus to continue to GENOA.

Note: The train to Cinque Terre is a regular local railway service, not a tourist service. Sometimes the trains are full (it is not possible to book places on these trains) so it might be necessary, on occasion, to travel standing and not seated. In these cases we suggest walking to the monumental site (approximately 900 meters).

Day 13 - Genoa -Santa Margherita Ligure -Portofino -Milan

We will continue our journey to the nearby city of SANTA MARGHERITA LIGURE, where we will embark for PORTOFINO, one of the most exclusive places in Europe. Enjoy a stroll by the sea and time at leisure. After lunch, we continue to MILAN, the busy northern city in which we recommend a visit to the cathedral.

Note: Due to weather conditions in winter, sometimes the boat to Portofino does not operate, in which case access will be by urban microbus (poor quality service, sometimes long waiting times).

Milan -Lakes Region -Verona

Day 14 - Milan -Lakes Region -Verona

Today we see one of the most beautiful scenic areas of Europe, the region of the Italian lakes. First we will travel to LAKE ORTA in ORTA DE SAN GIULIO, a well-preserved medieval city. We take a train ride to reach the center of the medieval town, and then a boat to the ISLAND OF SAN GIULIO, a little island on the lake with a monastery. After this we go on to LAKE MAGGIORE, making a stop in STRESA, where we have the option to visit the Borromean Islands, and especially ISOLA BELLA with its gardens and palace (closed in the winter). Time for lunch. After lunch we go on to VERONA.

Note: during the winter months the Orta train does not operate. In that case you will access the medieval town by walking approximately 800 meters from the bus parking lot.

Verona -Venice

Day 15 - Verona -Venice

We will have time to see Verona, the city of Romeo and Juliet before leaving for VENICE, where we arrive at about 13.00 hrs. We include a boat trip to the area of St. Mark’s Square, with a local guide we take a stroll around the City of Canals. There will also be a chance to admire the glasswork of Murano. Afterwards enjoy some leisure time, maybe a trip in a gondola? Accommodation in the Mestre district.

Venice -Padua -San Marino -Gubbio -Perugia

Day 16 - Venice -Padua -San Marino -Gubbio -Perugia

Today we leave for PADUA, the destination of many pilgrims, where we will see the Saint’s Basilica. Then we will go on to the Adriatic coast to see SAN MARINO, a small independent country on top of a strongly fortified mountain. Time for lunch. We travel on through pretty mountain countryside, crossing the Apennines to GUBBIO, a marvelously preserved town in which the Palace of Consuls and the 12th century cathedral stand out. Continuing to PERUGIA.

Perugia -Assisi -Rome

Day 17 - Perugia -Assisi -Rome

PERUGIA is a historic city, also known as the City of Chocolate. With a local guide we will explore, climbing its ramps that cross the rocky outcrop, and we will be surprised by its squares and stone streets. After this we travel to ASSISI, there we will have time for lunch and to see the Basilica of St Francis. Afterwards, we travel to ROME, arriving in the afternoon.
